Its a good way to lose quick weight... You will only gain more back if you pig out. If you don't do any kind of exercise you will never lose weight. Only eat what you plan to burn off.
Plus read this if you want did a little research...
The trick is to only eat what you plan on burning off. The stuff that isn't used will be stored as fat (reserved energy). The fat is only burned off when there are no other forms of energy left (sugars, carbs, proteins). Fat is also a key nutrient for proper brain function (mainly the essential fatty acids - the ones your body can't produce - omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids), so eliminating fat from your diet is not a good idea. As long as you are eating those 2 fats, your body can produce all of the other fats it needs from carbs and proteins.
With that said, if you are highly active, you can pretty much eat whatever you want as long as you are getting the proper amounts of vitamins and energy (fat, protein, carbs, sugars), and you are burning the energy you intake. If you are not very active, you have the option of eating crappy food (dieting) your whole life or getting fat.
From what I have read, the only form of fasting that will do you any good is if you do it for like a week straight, and it will be very hard to go that long without eating anything.
If I go all out and eat a bunch of s h i t, I must do 2 things within the next couple of days:
1a.)Work out pretty hardcore (mainly intense cardio - like playing basketball for 2+ hours the next day) or
1b.)Eat Diet type foods (like mainly vegetables and fiber with little energy food)
2.)Drink alot of water to take stress off of your kidneys and liver (they get overworked filtering all the toxins/fat out of all the **** you ate/drank)
If you are concerned with taking good shits, eat alot of grains/vegetables.
To get the optimal amount of vitamins eat alot of different colored fruits and vegetables. Take a vitamin C supplement with at least 1000 - 10000 mg, and for optimal energy take a vitamin B complex supplement with about a 1000% percent of the daily recomended value of the different forms of b vitamins. If you don't drink enough water all the vitamin b and c will go to waste and won't be utilized because these 2 vitamins are stored in water. The other vitamins (A,D,E,K) are all stored in fat cells, so your body can hold on to them if they aren't being used. You still need to get enough of these or body won't function right.
This is about the shortest answer I could come up with to answer your question, hope it helps.
I tried this diet years ago. After a few days it gets pretty boring and you don't look forward to the next meal.
You DO lose weight but don't stay on this diet for too long because you do need a few carbs and protein to make a balanced diet.
After losing the weight you can keep it off by eating evenly portioned meals, so I came to the conclusion that I should eat the proportioned meals instead of going through all this.
I've tried it...for one it's tough. I actually loved the soup, but it is very specific as to what else you can eat while you're on it, you don't do it for "a couple of weeks" as it there are certain things you're supposed to eat certain days (as in you add a baked potato one day, then fruits but no bananas the next, then the next bananas are ok, etc...), you lose all your energy by the 3rd day too.
It is water weight, as cabbage is a potent diuretic, so yes, a good portion of the weight comes right back...PLUS you're going to get some intense cravings, as you've deprived your body of most of the nutrients that it needs to function = more weight gain.
The cabbage soup (or Sacred Heart) diet was intended for obese people who needed to quickly drop weight for a surgery, or something specific like it. It wasn't intended for regular dieting...trust me.
If it's unhealthy and all you lose is water weight, why on Earth would you want to do it?
The only reason any diet might work for a short period of time is because it causes you to burn more calories than you consume. You can do this with any food you want. It's that simple. If you don't want to risk gaining the weight back, you need to change your lifestyle and eat healthy forever.
