i obviously know the body style is different; but mechanically, what has changed?
i own a 2001 jetta glx vr6. i LOVE my car when its not in the shop. it causes me so many problems.
the check engine light is the best working thing on the car because its always on. ha
anyway, I'm looking at getting a 5th generation jetta, maybe a 2007 or newer but don't want to deal with all the things i deal with now (mechanically and electrically).
if you have a newer jetta, let me know how you like it, if there are any problems that reoccur, etc.

Take a look at the link below for a complete history of the Jetta. It details the differences between generations.
Mk5 Jetta
I have the MK5 with the 2.5 engine 6 speed Tiptronic transmission and at 115K I have already replaced the cylinder on the tranny as well as the head gasket cover from the engine. And a week ago my right front window wouldnt close/roll up so go figure. I love my car but the financial consequences of owning it just doesnt justify buying one just like it or keeping it for more years to come. However I do get a LOT of compliments because of the car (usually from females) and I love the courtesy lights and how well grounded it is on the freeway. Buttons on the radio and for the windows tends to peel off as well as the headliner, VW fixed this problem by providing a new type of buttons so it wont peel off. Oh and I was smoked by a 4 cylinder 2013 Camry by my cousin more than once on a red light LOL. BUT I feel like a million bucks when I drive her around town.
First I need to point out a major pet pieve of mine. No VW should ever be in the shop that long. Come on. I spent 10 years only working on VW's and so much of a car is how it's repaired. Crappy mechanics= too much time in shop. Ewwwww!!!! Anyways, the a-5 jetta no longer has a VR-6 option. so that sucks. The 2.5 has been okay so far, the 2.0 turbo is much better, and of course the TDI rocks. With all this said, it's up to how the car feels when you drive it. First you need to drive all 3 and treat them like you stole them. As in, put them through your normal day. SECOND PLEASE get a new VW tech. No way should a VW be in the shop more than your driveway.
My wife drives and loves her 2005 MKV Jetta.
She says its the best car we have ever bought. It has over 82,000 super-reliable miles on it. We use it as an everyday driver as well as our 'vacation mobile'. The roof rack accomodates our bilkes and kayaks. Plus, the cavernous trunk can swallow assorted gear with ease.
This Jetta has the 2.5 engine and gives us abt. 30+ MPG. My wife loves to shift so we have the 5 speed, altho the auto trans should be good too.
The only items we have done is routine oil/filter changes, tires, and 2 bulbs. Thats it. This Jetta has given us unsurpassed joy-of-ownership.
Best of all, no check engine lites!! We will keep this car for many more years to come......
The GL is the least equipped of the two, A/C became elective, no cruise administration and had crank abode windows. The GLS got here uncomplicated with the A/C, potential abode windows, cruise and TCS, to not point out suggestions like heated seats, sunroof and 2 engines that have been not provided interior the GL. As for the engines, the a million.8T's specifications are for those years; 150hp 155lb.ft, for later a million.8Ts (2002 and up) the specifications could be 180hp 170lb.ft. The specifications for the two.0L are 115hp and 120lb.ft of torque, they remained the comparable from 2000 to 2005. The intake is comparable for the two, yet while it quite is something it relatively is way less complicated on gas you're after there is often the TDI engine (diesel). The TDI became provided in the two trim tiers.
Mk5 introduced the 1.4 TSI turbocharged petrol engine while compare with other models.
It has cool driving position, fine instruments, and strong engine and also It was criticized for having high levels of road noise, uncomfortable seats, and poor fuel economy.
