They had gods and goddesses of harvest, moon, sun, death, life, war, peace, wisdom, beauty...pretty much every aspect of life was dominated by some god or goddess. They believed that by offering respect and praise in these beings names, they would be rewarded with good harvests and wisdom. Things like that, if things went wrong, they had done something to make the gods and goddesses angry.
