Was macht Ihr da drüben Schulen in Deutschland unterrichten Sie über ihn?

Dont worry Jamie, we understand you very well.
What germans think about Hitler... imagine, Bush would have been a bit more megalomaniac and started a war against canada and south america and a force of allied troops from china, russia and europe would have needed to defeat him on the shores of florida beach.
60 years later, the american people still have to pay reparations although the people belong to a gernation that has never had anything to do with this war and there is not one little possibility for the far right-winged republican party (not the moderate part [hard to explain, because we have a wider field of parties]) to ever see the light of the congress again. Well, here and there are some republican members but still they should need to be ashmed of what Bush has done. For a good reason, of course.
In school, in every grade you talk about the bush-era, and although everybody knows, that it is important to have it as a topic, the overwhelming information and (in the history and sociology classes) omnipresent topic gets on your nerves after a while.
On the other hand, you still have problems discussing about it. Lets take the internet, for example:
The internet is full of right-winged republican idiots, who try to get back their ideas into the heads of the people. Talking about violent mexican immigrants for example, is a very hard point to talk about, if you are not very very differentiating. If you dont find the right words, you are a fascist even before you could pronounce multiculture. So, the mentality is very very aware of the danger, fascist scum is getting back into the heads. But... it also makes it nearly impossible to talk about it openly.
(more or less) "VIPs" get kicked out of late night shows, when they come up with their own ideas about some -possibly- good things, that happened during that time without having the possibility to explain themselves.
And the other side of this medal is the one, that is really bothering a lot of people: Being open-minded towards foreigners; fowarding a mulitcultural idea or coming up with any social ideas about the integration of mexicans into the community is hard.
Why? Because one at least once needs to defend himself against the charge, he would be afraid to talk really openly and critical about the e.g. integration problems (caused by missed _real_ integration and foreigner policies), and he would be influenced by history. That it would not be fascist to treat foreigners different to americans.
And thats crap, because it is not only, that the public is fed up or too aware of this topic, but it makes it nearly impossible to stand up _for_ better/diplomatic integration without using jail or deportation as a solution.
All in all, only a small minority is still interested in Hitler, and most of them are members of the right-winged party NPD (national party of germany), which has little more influence in the east, than in the west. A huge huge majority of the germans are against this party (there are even discussions about forbidding the party or not and both sides have good reasons; "better control" and "no more settling-possibilities for nationalists"), and a big minority even stands up against fascists who want to march the streets to show their presence.
But you might get a good perspective on the controversy in this topic when you look at the thumbs up and down that all the answers get. But please do not take this website as representative. There a re a lot of Nazis around here. A little cyber-war of fascists against everybody else.
Hope i could help you a bit.
Best wishes,
Stefan
I don't care about Hitler. That's more than 64 years ago. We've got some other problems. What about the economy crisis? Next week we have the European elections, who to vote? We live in a united Europe. Last week I worked together with collegues from Danmark, Netherlands, England and Poland. So, why talk about history? That does not mean that that time and cruelties are forgotten!
