I'm working on a short essay about the book Timeline, this is what its about
One of the first differences the team noticed after arriving in 1357 was the lack of ambient noise--the silence. Then, when they rested in the abandoned hut and had field greens for breakfast, Chris felt happier than he could remember feeling in a long time. What do you think made him feel this way. Discuss 14th century simplicity vs. the complexity of our contemporary culture.

Yes, what a great story it is.
Read the articles I've cited. Ambient noise causes fatigue of the central nervous system by constantly bombarding our senses including the sense of touch I would suspect since sound is only waves moving though the air that actually vibrate the tympanic membranes in our ears. I am a pretty touch sensitive person and suffer nerve damage due to an accident long ago. Noise affects my focus, concentration and overall well being, especially non-direct noise that just constantly beats my body, nerves, brain receptors, and thus my spirit.

By the way, the great Black Death of 1349 (plague) had just about killed about half the population of central Europe at that time. The story is set in France if I recall.
Good luck with your paper.
