I got two hermit crabs for my little brother and sister for a birthday gift.
We've had them, for about 2 weeks.
The humidity is 75-80%,
The temperature is a constant 75,
We have two shells for each crab, not included the ones on them.
Its a ten gallon tank with a salt water dish, fresh water dish and sponge, climbing net, two hide out homes, decorations, a food bowl, and the substrate is half sand and half coconut husk.
Its a crabitat dream house!
Well anyways, they always hide though. They come out at night because the cage is always a mess in the morning and the food is less then what it was at night. They are constantly buried, I haven't seen either one for about 4 days, but they aren't molting because they come up at night, they've been switching shells.
Why are the hiding so much?
I am so disappointed, I didn't expect them to always be active for my brother and sister to play with, but they are not even visible at all! Whats wrong?!?

I believe hermies are nocturnal. You won't find them out during the day too much. However, if you take them out and let them relax on your hands, they eventually wake up and crawl around a little.
My hermit crab was the same, he was always buried or in his shell. and he would always come up at night making all kinds of noise. Anyways what I did was get an old tupperware put some warm water in there and put him in, after 10-15 mins he came out and washed up and I kept doing that at least once a week for a month. Then I noticed he was a little more active during the day. I'm not sure if that applies to all hermit crabs but you could always try.
You have to keep in mind that hermit crabs are nocturnal and that they can still be stressed because of the move from the pet store to their new crabitat for up to a month and bury themselves to relieve stress.
Remember, hermit crabs are nocturnal! I think that you should take them outside of the cage a few times a day and "baby talk" with them everyday, so they will become more social.
They are hermit crabs.....that is what they do,,,,
if you want more action then get more crabs..
idk,the things kinda creep me out
