My doctor prescribed me Celebrex for my sciatic nerve but after researching all of it's negative side effects I have decided not to continue taking it. I have only taken 2 100mg tablets (one day's worth of the medicine) and am not planning to take any more. I have a friend's birthday tommorow and am wondering if I will be able to drink at it? It will have been slightly over 24 hours from the last dose. How long does it take to get out of my system? I'm not concerned about tracing, I am just worried about the stomach bleeding.

1- Have you actually HAD any negative side effects? No. You've only taken 2 pills, and got yourself freaked out because you read the package insert. The drug companies have to publish the very long list for medico-legal reasons, but in fact it is a very safe, well tolerated medication for the vast majority of people. (compare that with herbal meds which have NO safety guidelines, and no warnings) In my experience, most people report side effects only after they've read the warnings listing possible side effects....ie...it is largely psychosomatic.
2- The risk of "stomach bleeding" is EXTREMELY rare with Celebrex and other COX-2 Inhibitors. That is it's entire reason for existing. It was developed to replace traditional NSAID's which do have more likelihood of GI side effects...especiallly good old, "natural" ASA, derived from willow bark. That being said, it is not a particularly strong pain killer, and if you are young and healthy you would probably be fine on the older, cheaper drugs.
3-The 1/2 life is about 11-12 hours, this is an average depending on absorption and your own physiology. This means in 12 hours there will be about 100mg, in 24 hours about 50 mg, in 36 hours about 25 mg etc etc.
4-Your risk of stomach bleeding is far greater just from drinking at your friends party as is your risk of being injured or killed in a car accident after drinking. You seem fine with those risks.
You are right many of these drugs do have a long list of side effects. As do any drugs, there are none without side effects not even a vitamin pill...or food come to that everything is ones mans poison.
Point is one has to balance whether to take it is better than the pain one is suffering. Coming from a person who is so allergic to everything that my own GP will not give me anything for RA and OA and I also have osteoporosis. he just will not. I had stomach bleeding after 16 hours of a tablet. Enough to be in hospital for 6 days.
Now I have nothing except half a paracetamol every four hours and that is it. So balance between the pain and the side effects.
I would suggest you try massage if afraid of taking tablets, also heat treatment and perhaps some yoga but only form a person who is experienced and has taught for a long while as they should have the experience to tell you what is best.
I hope I have helped but do email me if not.
