I read a few pages of Homestuck but then it got boring so I stopped reading it.
Then my friend read it and encouraged me to continue reading it.
So I think I kind of understand it, but I'm still a bit confused.
So the story is told in first person sometimes and third person?
And in the first act the characters open up Sburb and are transported into some kind of game?
Is that why there is green mice that the kids use to play the game and why John could expand his room with a click of a button?
If I have any of the above information incorrect could you help me understand Homestuck a little better?
Thanks!

It's told in second person, so when a character is on screen they are referred to as "you". This is because homestuck is inspired by adventure games where players take control of the characters and give them commands. When you get something like "Jane: be the other girl", it's like you are switching characters in a video game.
You can think of Sburb as sort of an apocalyptic version of the Sims. When a player installs the sburb client, they are allowing their environment to be directly manipulated by their server player, who has the other half of the game installed. Sburb allows the server player to use the Sims house-building mechanic on the house of their client player. Building, and later alchemizing costs grist, which is like an in game currency that can be won by defeating the enemies the game provides.
After completing the earlier series of in-game tasks, the players can transport their houses into the Sburb game itself, which is in a different plane of reality and where things really start getting interesting.
Homestuck is basically about a boy who decides to play a game, but deliberately end up causing the end of the world. They are then transported into the medium, which is kinda like a universe between the trolls and the humans. (correct me if I'm wrong) And John wasn't necessarily expanding his room, that was Rose. Rose is John's co-player, meaning she can edit and build things in his house while at her house via laptop.
that's particularly complicated and would not incredibly get interesting until Act 4. i comprehend that lots of people are like, "Homestuck is wonderful! you're able to desire to examine it!" then you certainly examine it and are like, "Wat." yet believe me, it gets an excellent purchase greater effective as quickly as you get to the stable stuff. basically attempt to not get too into the fandom, some followers are loopy and you will probable get spoilers.
if you're confused now, wait until you get to act 5
that's when it gets delirious biznasty.
