No he is not retired, just needed some time off to mend some real injuries. The storyline seems to be going that he was going to retire but because of what Jericho did to his wife at SummerSlam he'll defy doctors orders and come back to fight Chris. Hopefully It'll be a real great gimmick match like last man standing or a ladder match.
Afterwards though while he may not be retired I have heard him taking a more relaxed schedule. Thats fine by me as I don't want to see him burn himself out or really have to retire.
No its just a storyline first they will show how jericho retires HBK and for next few months they will continue the retirement angle when suddenly something happens and HBK will return before month of Wrestlemania and they will settle this feud on Wrestlemania.(but HBK suffers from some legimate injuries)
Storylinewise, yes, but you know that he'll be back soon to avenge his wife's injury. If HBK was really retiring, then they would have done something much bigger and better than a simple speech. He's been around for 20 years now and is an icon.
At SummerSlam, Michaels was scripted to announce his retirement from professional wrestling, though the staged rivalry between Jericho and himself continued after Jericho punched Michaels' wife in the face.
Storyline yes, reallity No, if he was not gonna come back I'm sure Chris Jericho would have been involved with the title match at Unforgiven, as his name has not been mentioned for it I guess HBK will return for a match with Jericho at Unforgiven.

I think it is part of the storyline. Kind of like what WWE did with Undertaker and Ric Flair. Shawn Michaels will most probably return.

Of course not. He'll come out of "retirement" at Unforgiven to get revenge on Jericho.
