I have been researching Metternich and am extremely unclear on what he did exactly. I know he was a great diplomat and engineered the Congress of Vienna. I want to know about his role during Napoleon's reign and his relationship with Napoleon... thanks guys!

During the congress of Vienna, someone saw Metternich and Talleyrand walking together, and commented there goes Vice (Talleyrand) and Treachery (Metternich). Metternich had convinced both Napoleon and Czar Alexander that he was really their friend at the same time. Metternich took credit for the Marriage of Napoleon to Arch Duchess Marie Louise, making the Austrian Emperor Napoleons father in law. It was Metternich who convinced Napoleon that the Austrian Emperor Joseph liked him and thought of him as a beloved son in law. As a result of Metternich's personal diplomacy, Austria did not get the harsh peace terms that Prussia got.
