I recently sold my car and now I'll have my father's 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee with over 300k on it...The thing still runs mint and has only had 500$ in fixes in the last 2 years. She does do a lot of rattling when going down the road but other than that shes a beaut. Anyways...do these Jeep's really have the life power to last well over 300k miles? Should I be expecting anything to fail on me soon or is it just a matter of time?
Thanks
Update:Thanks for the answers! I hope I can get another 300k outta her ;)

That in line six was the best motor ever made for a jeep and has long been a good solid work horse and performer. You had like the best of the best right there and that is why its still running. I would just make sure the oil is clean and keep it tuned and see how far it will go you never know it may last awhile yet an oil stabilizer from lucas may be a good idea once those bearings get worn in good it does not hurt to give it a bit of extra protection just don't go overboard. The other thing that makes a huge difference is to warm it up good before driving off first thing in the morning. I have bought high mileage cars from older people with the drive train all original and it mint condition and believe it or not they all said the same thing when I asked them what was the secret. I was informed that warming the car up well before moving and keeping the oil clean and the car tuned kept it around running long and strong for many years. hope you get 300 thousand more miles out of that jeep!
Congratulations on reaching 300,000 miles. Just to let you know, whether you have the Inline 6 or the V8 version, these engines are very durable. 300,000 miles doesn't sound like an amazing feat for them. They can go a lot longer. However, the drivelines on those aren't known for being very durable from my experience with them. Either you have an exceptional unit and you take extremely good care of it, or others don't take care of theirs and abuse them. Whatever the case, you did it and should continue driving it till it dies. The rattling sounds like you might need the shocks replaced.Otherwise, if you deciede to keep it, it wouldn't be a bad idea. Just keep it maintained. Who knows what kind of miles you'll be able to get out of it. Just have a mechanic inspect it to make sure that there aren't any hidden issues at this point.
The fuel injected inline 6 with the 4 speed overdrive transmission was as close to bulletproof a drive train as Jeep has ever produced. My '87 got gobbled up by the cash for clunkers program with 256K miles on it. It was still reliable, but the $4500 trade in was too good to pass up. I have recently purchased an '89 with *only* 157K miles. Good luck with yours. BTW Don't buy parts at the dealer unless you can't find them anywhere else. They love their parts and price them accordingly.
The AMC 258 cid inline 6 was a good engine, it will probably be still running fine when the body disintegrates into dust. It's too bad Chrysler discontinued it when they bought AMC.
I agree with everything said above... that inline 6 is bulletproof if taken care of.
One thing to watch is the transmission. Do you know the last time the fluid/filter was changed out? If not, I'd recommend getting the fluid/filter changed. **DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE GET A TRANSMISSION FLUSH** -- only a Fluid and Filter change.
Dude, shes just broken in just change the oil and go.
