For the past year I've been going online to chatrooms. People asked me for a picture of me, so I gave it to them. Some of the people I talked to online about everyday. It was two or three of them. Eventually I became really uncomfortable with all my information out there, so I confessed that I lied to them & gave a fake picture and name to cover. I haven't really gone on for the past few weeks, I just really want to put the whole thing behind me. The whole ordeal has been about a year and a half, how can I get over the guilt and shame of the entire situation? In the long run would you consider it a big deal? How common is it?

Rebecca, I think it's extremely common. And no, if I had befriended someone and they confessed to me that they had misrepresented themselves online, I would not consider it a big deal in the long run. Instead of thinking of yourself as someone who did something shameful, think of yourself as someone who did something brave and honorable by being honest and setting the record straight.
