I've heard, read, and watched about Ranger School many times. Everytime anyone even says Ranger School instantly the difficulty of it is brought up. Is it really as hard as everyone makes it seem? Is it more mentally tough than physically?
After Basic, Infantry School, and Airborne School do you think you would be in enough physical shape to handle Ranger School? or do you think it is needed to be in even better shape?
Any one that has actually gone through modern Ranger School plz give me some advice on what to expect, how to prepare, and any information.
I leave for Ft. Benning June 24th to start basic/infantry school, and since I have the Ranger Incentive on my contract... after this I leave for Airborne School, and then go to RIP to be a part of the 75th Ranger, then I begin actual Ranger School.
So I have roughly 1 year.. maybe a few months more, to prepare for Ranger School.. so any advice/tips would be great

I went through Ranger School in 1970, things have changed somewhat. In those days you could only apply for Ranger School after you re-upped after your first tour. The training is very demanding physically, and there is really no way to explain it, you have to be in very good condition to avoid being washed out at the initial stages.
The best training you can do for prep. is to run, run all the time, distance and endurance will serve you well. As you may have heard, the real difficulty is mental, you will have little rest, and virtually no sound sleep for the duration, so your body must be in great condition. If it is not, your mental processes will deteriorate rapidly from exhaustion.
I really don't know what the graduation rate is now. When I went, only about one fourth of us 'got the tab'. But in those days there were no provisions for repeating phases that were not passed.
Judging by the way you worded it, I think you mean RIP in the place of ranger school, right? Because you dont have to go to ranger school in the Ranger reg. until your about to become a NCO. You can try earlier for it if you want. But I think what your saying is you are worryed about how hard RIP is? Well either way you got plenty of time to get in great shape beefore you even go into the army & on top of that you will go through basic/AIT & Airbourne training before you get to RIP. You should be in good enough shape for SF if you train good now. Seriously you have 6 months to train yourself as hardcore as you like & then you have 14 weeks of basic/AIT & then 3 weeks of Airbourne training. You got plenty of time to be in great shape. Just work on push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, swimming, & running. Stretch a lot to make your self as flexable as yo can. Basically do whatever is needed to build endurance. Heres a work out Im doing just to prepare myself until I go to MEPS. Yeah its SEALs but the way I figure if you can do this before you go to the army than the army physical activities wont be as bad. Also since you not going to basic for so long I assume your in DEP, dont forget to take advantage of that & do all the stuff so you will be as militarly prepared as you can & if you complete it than you go in at a higher rank. If you do all the DEP & distance learning & reffer 2 reqruits than you should be going in at E-3 at least or E-4. Good luck & work at it hard & you will do great!
i don't know if you can get that on your contract or not. i went to ranger school through the marine corps they had an open slot and my CO got me the seat. as far as physical demands run everywhere, frankly if you can pass marine corps boot camp you can pass army rangers school physically. mentally is were you need to be focusing its still not that hard but making decisions with no sleep is difficult until you do it enough. i have allot of respect for the army rangers i still have allot of friends that are in the rangers. and as far as I'm concerned there the closest thing to marines the army has and i support them fully.
You cannot have a contract for ranger school.
Someone lied to you.
You can only get a RIP contract,
Allowing you to go to RIP and then be assigned to the ranger regiment.
A RIP contract does not get you into Ranger School.
Just think about it, what would be the purpose of allowing a private, to go to ranger school, they aren't even a trained soldier yet.
Generally you have to be an E-4 , before you can attend Ranger School.
