I want to put a new sound system in my ol' '79 mercedes. The speakers in there now are junk and the radio is horrible too. I want to put the 2 new speakers in the front and install 2 speakers in the rear shelf. What brands are recommended and what wattage should I be looking for. Also, I want to put a 12" Sub in the rear shelf. Is that possible and will it sound ok? I want to have a heavy bass but not too crazy. Also what make/ Wattage? Also, I need amplifiers, right? What wattage, make? How many and what type of radio should I get. I want to make it sound really nice and am basicly starting from scratch because the audio system in it now is junk. I am looking to spend no more that $500. Thanks in advance for any help.

If that Mercedes has the fuel tank vertically behind the rear seat, I wouldn't recommend trying to install a sub in the rear deck. In fact, it is real difficult to get bass in that car if that's the case.
Also instead of buying a bunch of cheap junk (which is what you will get for $500) get a decent radio (maybe a JVC KDG140) and decent dash and deck speakers for now (maybe Memphis Power Reference series). Later when you get some more cash together, worry about the subwoofer end of your system.
I would put some 6" x 9" jensen 200 watt speakers for the back and some smaller ones up front(good price for the sound). The I would go with a Kicker 12" sub w/ a 2 channel 300-400 watt amplifier. All will cost arounf 400$ and sound nice!
