It all depends on the brand. Personally, I would contact Jacob at Sundown Audio regarding the SA-8D4 woofer. 400 watts is the RMS rating on this sub, and in the right box will hit consistent 140+ dB's on music. Of course, 400 watts won't quite cut it, but you will be very impressed on what such a small woofer can do :D
This sub is highly underrated, I run both of my SA-8D2's on 1,000W RMS each daily and they have held up for months (waiting on them to blow so I can get my SPL coils :D). They are priced very good and the quality is unmatched for the money. Only $134.99 a sub with free shipping. I would wait for around a month or so, I think the SA-8Dv.2's are getting ready to drop soon and I've heard some pretty good changes to them. Hope this helps!
If you do it right, an 8" sub can sound just as good as two 12" subs. It just depends on the quality of the sub and the quality of the design and build of the enclosure. And of course the quality of the amplifier pushing the 8". I sell a $100 8" sub that would blow your mind.
It depend on what type/ brand and the wattage of the the sub. If it's an off brand low watt sub you will barley hear it. If you have a solo baric or autobahn type sub they could hit like a 12. It all depends on how deep your pockets are.
