System("pause") in reality needs you to #include <Windows.h>
Dev c++ is crap btw..
But people use pause to hold the command prompt window open after their execution. Windows normally closes this by default.
IDEs like code::blocks and Visual Studio (ctrl-f5) will hold the window open for you automatically so you don't have to call pause or use other gimmicks like taking an input etc.
