Hello, I have a 1999 Camaro automatic 107k miles.
The tranny fluid dipstick shows a color that is in between red and black. When hot it does smell a little burnt.
----------
-is it possible to smell the tranny getting hot and burning while inside the cabin even if it doesnt leak?
-is it possible that the tranny may jerk the car in the back when it is hot, but be fine when it is cool?
......you see I bought this car at a used dealer. I don't think the previous owners regularly serviced the tranny. The color is blackish. Is this ok for a high mileage car, or should it always be red?
someone also told me not to service the tranny at such high mileage if it wasnt doen before/

yes you can smell it from inside the cab it shouldnt jerk the car your tranny fluid is getting burnt witch means the trannys not working properly or its being used hard so either your driving like you stole it the trannys wore out or you have some issues some were elsin in your drive line making the car work its *** off any change in gas millage and yes in a higher millage vehicle with signs of tranny trouble changing the fluid is like rushian rulet it willl either get better or take it out all together. and tranny fluid should always be red and smell sweet
The tranny fluid should always be red, not brown or black. I too have seen cars with high mileage get their tranny fluid changed and within the week the tranny was junk. So changing the fluid is a gamble. Unfortunately it sound like the tranny is burnt. Your'e supposed to check that stuff before you buy. Live and learn, you will know better next time.
