Okay, the sound "Shhhhhhhh"
As in the sound to politely order quietness.
How does this let people know to be quite? Is it just known knowledge, or is it calming in some way?
I have also heard that it is erotically stimulating to some.

stop it, i am having spasms
Its basically a word. So as you grow up you get used to what Shhhhhh means.
I have heard that it's erotically stimulating, it's quite a calm sound maybe it makes people feel secure. It could of course be used to the opposite effect. As in domination (making the other person obey you)
But i wont go any further. I don't want to get banned!
Why does "ow" mean people are in pain in English? But in Japanese it is "itai."
It's just the evolution of a language, and it is passed down from generation to generation.
The sound "shhhh" can be calming to newborns, infants, and people in distress because contrary to some people's thinking, the womb is not quiet. There is blood rushing everywhere and shifting of muscles and bones.
Essentially, the sound is subconsciously reminiscent of a calm time, so it is calming.
Any consistent, low sound can be considered comforting.
its the short and polite form of shush or shut up. its not calming just a short, admonishment that catches the noisy ones attention. if it stimulates someone erotically then i think maybe they are into bondage or control and like being told to shut up.
I think it is just common knowledge, be around since I was a kid years and years ago..lol But I'm not turned on by it, I don't like being told to be quite..lol
humm.. never thought about that. I think it's just kinda assumed. there are alot of things that are weird like that. and I never thought that shh would be erotically stimulating.... that's the weirder part.
it is calming, as you say.
babies especially like the shushing sound,
because it reminds them of the sounds that they hear in the
womb. and the shushing sound is calming to people of all ages for that reason, because as babies they feel comforted by the sound, as children calmed by the sound, and as adults they recognize the sushing sound as calming.
its the sound of the ocean, which is calming and the sound you hear in the womb, and is widely known so it works and people know what it means
Ha ha... Cute question.
I know to be quite when I hear "Shhhhhhhhh" because of my childhood... My mother would "shhhh" me when I was too loud.
It's rude, and if someone does that to me at the movie theater I only talk louder
it turns me on, like saying shhhh your going to wake up your sister
