I was just reading about this the other day on a baby website and am going through this with my son. He's 18 months old and he is just starting to transition to one nap a day. The problem is that 1 nap doesn't seem to be enough and 2 naps seem to be too many for him and he's been getting overly tired. I read that 18 months is usually the age when this happens, but of course every baby is different. Probably 15-21 months is a more accurate time-frame. Your baby will let you know by really fighting to take his second nap. Most children I know usually give up their morning nap, but my son is opposite. He has to have his morning nap and has given up his afternoon one.
Keep in mind that this will depend on how much your baby sleeps at night too. Most babies need about 13-14 hours of sleep in a 24 hour period at this age. Take cues from your baby and definitely don't rush it and you'll be fine!
Your question can't be answered with certainty, as every child is different.
Your little guy will more or less tell you when he no longer needs a morning nap. If you put him to bed and he doesn't fall asleep within 20 minutes ... chances are he only needs one nap a day. If he's in a good mood and content ... let him play, and try him on only one nap per day.
I usually found that my children were usually tired by about 1:00 pm, and they'd sleep for about 1 1/2 to 2 hrs. If I was held up while out running errands, and put them down for a nap any later, they weren't very tired when bed-time rolled around (which was usually 8:00pm). I usually fed them lunch, let them play for an hour ... or took them to the park, and they were usually more than ready for a nap by 1:00 pm. :)
when he is ready for only one. My son is 15 months and is now transitioning to one nap a day. Some days he still needs two and others he is only tired at about noon. When you notice that you child isn't sleepy in the morning anymore, try pushing the nap to a later time. Keep him/her up until he/she is showing major signs of being tired. If they don't show signs by noon, I would lay them down just to see how tired they really are. My daughter is 3 and still takes very long naps during the day, she only takes one, but it is about 4 hours long (sweetest time of the day for me). Hope this helps, and know that your child is not behind because they are still taking two naps.
It all depends on the child. My oldest stopped taking naps as soon as I switched him to a youth bed. The next two, still took naps up to right before they started school. Some kids need the naps and others don't.
When he's ready or when you notice that his naps interfere with his ability to sleep at night.
If he's getting ready for preschool or daycare, he will not be able to nap as much as he would when he is in your care. In this case, I would suggest cutting his naps from two to one longer nap, or shortening the time he sleeps.
However, having said that, if your son sleeps well at night and functions well during the day, there is no reason for his sleep time to be cut back. Some children need more sleep than others to regain their energy. Eventually, his body will let him know that he needs less sleep.
My one year old only takes one nap a day. I would say let your one year old take 2 naps aday til it seems he/she doesn't need the second nap anylonger. I would say at about 15-18 months old.
it usually begins to change about 18 months to 24 months...
then one afternoon nap (1 or 2 pm) should do it.
When he is ready - don't force it. Count your lucky stars for the fact he has two sleeps and that he sleeps at all. Some Mums would be very envious of your luck. Mine all slept twice a day until they were three and a half years old and started kindy. How lucky was I?
when he is about 4-5
Let me make sure I understand what you're asking......are you saying you WANT him to just take one nap???
