well rule out salamanders then
salamanders like all amphibians CANNOT be handled. they absorb everything through there skin and the chemicals on and produced by your skin are harmful to them.
my suggestions
leopard gecko, fun easy to care for and friendly
crested gecko, harder to care for require tall tanks(18 inches minimum) and can be quite shy at first but once tamed down fun to handle and quite easy to keep
bearded dragon, fun and friendly but get quite large (18 inches) and need alot of space (4foot long vivarium minimum)
go with a gecko. they seem to be better when it comes to how simple it is to take care of it. geckos need very little food and care and are solitary most of their life. in fact, evrey reptile is easy to take care of compared to anphipians, which is the catagory a salamander would go under. salamanders also need more water and i don't know whattheir diet is. geckos eat beatles, moths, various house spiders, and other insects. they will need a good sized tank about this large:

and a heating lamp. geckos will also need a lot of plants (real or fake) and logs to sleep in salamders will need a tank that needs to be good enough to fit a small pond of water and good soil. salamanders will also need shady places, quiet area, andare better off without the niose of a younger sibling. i think salamanders just eat insects but i dont have any specific ones. you may have to water the salamanders tank daily to make sure he doesn't dry up.
if i were you i would get a gecko.
by the way, your mom would rather you have a lizard than a hamster? i had to convince my mom that my blue bellies wern't harmless! i guess your mom isn't as terrified of lizards as my mom is...
I would get a bearded dragon or a water dragon!
yeah go for a bearded dragon
