There are two characters, I might not kill either of them but I'm considering killing one because they're the two people closest to another character and sending her off on a murderous rampage because someone killed her sort-of-brother/friend would be entertaining.
There's the sort-of-brother who's not necessary to the big plotline but is my favorite character in the book, and he does serve a purpose. He's terrified of failing and letting an ally get killed, and would probably die stopping someone else from dying.
Or the character who is necessary but I can kill him after he's served his purpose. He would probably die in the major battle at the end.
Should I kill either? If so which one?

You should kill the sort of brother. I feel like readers would be more attached to him and more sad when he dies :)
I can see the use in killing one of them off. If you think it's the best move, go right on ahead.
Which to kill? Whichever one you think the *readers* like more. They'll be able to sympathize with the MC for going on a crazy rampage. And who knows? You might make the readers cry. >:) Muahahahaaa.
Good luck.
Neither. If you don't have a good enough reason to kill off a character, then don't kill off the character.
If you do have a good enough reason, then the choice comes with the reason.
Killing characters shouldn't be done lightly.
