My 10-year-old dachshund has had diarrhea for about a week now and its starting to get blood-tinged and mucous covered. As of yesterday, he's started having little white dots in there as well. They don't move and they don't have tails or anything like that. I followed my vet's orders to give him 1/4 tsp of pepto bismol twice daily and I've fasted him for twenty four hours but gave him unlimited water. After the fasting period, I gave him boiled white rice to see how his stomach handled it. He still has the diarrhea. I'm taking him into the vet this afternoon but I just want to see if anyone has any ideas of what it could be or if someone has had similar problems. Thanks in advance!
Update:Well, the vet informed me that my poor little guy has hookworms! :( Already had the first dose of dewormer. 2 more doses to go: one tomorrow and one next week. At least I know that he will be ok. And this was the first time I have gone to this veterinarian, he was so nice that he gave me 2 cans of prescription formula food to help his stomach for free! Fingers crossed guys and thanks for all the help!

The white spots could be the white rice... but you are definitely doing the right thing by taking him to the vet, don't forget the stool sample!
TAKING HIM TO THE VET IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO. THE DIARRHEA IF BLOOD TINGED IS NOT GOOD AND IT IS POSSIBLE THAT HE HAS DIARRHEA BECAUSE OF ALL THE WATER. HAD HE BEEN ON ANTIBIOTICS FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME? IF THIS WAS A HUMAN IT COULD BE C-DIFF. THE GOOD BACTERIA IN THE INTESTINES GET WIPED OUT DUE TO THE ANTIBIOTICS. A STOOL CULTURE WILL GIVE A DIAGNOSIS. ALSO CHECK HIS GUMS TO SEE IF THEY ARE PINK. IF THEY ARE PALE IN COLOR THAN THERE IS BLEEDING SOMEWHERE. ALL IN ALL TAKING HIM TO THE VET IS THE PROPER THING TO DO. I HOPE HE GETS BETTER. IT IS AWFUL WHEN AN ANIMAL IS SICK AND CAN'T TELL YOU.I KNOW THESE LITTLE GUYS LOOK AT YOU WITH THOSE BIG BROWN EYES AND WE MELT.MY LILLY HAS SO MANY EXPRESSIONS !!! SHE IS SOOOOOOO CUTE.
Sounds like Undigested rice. But, be careful that could be a sign of tapeworm!!!!
