Whitechapel / Spitalfields residents?
Iv'e been reading a lot about Jack the Ripper. In those times (1888), these 2 neighborhoods were where most of the murders took place. They were also the biggest slums and the most criminal localities of London. What are they like now? Would they still be considered poor neighborhoods and how closely do they still resemble what they were in Jack's day?

The area wasn't all poor. Some of the streets where the murders took place were a mix of criminal underclass and very rich weavers. It is still a mix with expensive apartments around Spitalfields Market and local authority housing to the east and Brick Lane.
None of the streets and buildings are the same as there were then. Most were destroyed in the war, although the police station still exists, but is now offices.
Still the same, but jack, as now been replaced by: Abdul the slasher.
Just to add, for the benefit of the non London historian's such as myself.
nearly all the streets where jack the ripper murdered his victims are still there today..........Albeit changed somewhat.
But if you look closely at the buildings towards the roof tops, you will still see numerous victorian architectural features.
As iv'e stated in other post's, London is the leading capital of the world, it as more historical value in one square mile than anywhere else on the planet, 50,000000 tourist a year cant be wrong, and all those that knock it, are pig jealous, but still want to live here.
