Why are private schools allowed to only accept persons from a single gender? Is it because if they are a religiously affiliated school there is a separation of church and state? Because, according to United States v. Virginia schools, the fourteenth amendment makes it illegal for schools to discriminate based on gender. Earlier in history, Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka states that separate is inherently unequal, if it is illegal for a private school to discriminate based on race, why is it allowed to discriminate based on gender? The school issues state diplomas, so should it not be held to the same standards as public schools?
Update:Note: The fact that the school is private does not take away from the fact that they accept the privilege to award state diplomas and accept federal No Child is Left Behind funds. How is "No women allowed" different from "No blacks allowed"?

The difference is that they are private. Public schools which are paid for by taxpayers cannot discriminate. A private school is paid for by the individual for their child's education only.
Private is the key word. Same reason why the Boy Scouts is only for boys and Girl Scouts is only for Girls.
A private school - they should be allowed to do what they want.
