I saw somewhere that if you charge your iPod until it reaches 100% full and you let it die every month then it help your battery life. But every time it shuts off I press the on button to see if it tells me I need to charge it, but instead it turns back on and says I have 20% remaining. The possess keeps on going. How do I get it to die?

You need to activated it from the most power consuming activity to the least one.
(you didn't mention which "ipod" model):
* Play games
* watch videos
* Use WiFi
* Play music (this is the least power consumer- so leave on to play after you did all the others).
Play a few games and just repeat, it will die eventually
