Technically Aussies speak English..right? So why do they say they speak Australian?
Why can't Americans do the same thing? Call it what it is? We speak American.
If we are so proud of our country why wouldn't we want to name the language we speak after it? American?
Or are Americans not as proud of their country as the Aussies are?

Yes Australians speak Australian. Have you ever heard an Aussie speak? I would hardly call that English. Every second word is an expletive.
If you look at dictionaries you will find that words can be American English or British English. It just takes too long to say American English, so why bother with it? I would guess that it's random whether the first half "American" or "English" is used, but part of a culture. In a dictionary you can find the language as a definition of "American".
I don't think if you would ask an Australian whether they'd speak English they'd tell you "no". So why should US residents?
Who cares anyway. Language doesn't have that much logic anyway.
Technically??? There is nothing technical about it. Australia's official language is ENGLISH. **surprise** Us Australians might call it Australian because you Yankees don't have a clue what we're talking about when we start talking and treat us like we are speaking another language, even without the expletives. It always blows me away to find subtitles for any accent on American TV.
We don't say we speak Australian. We speak English (albeit with an Australian accent), but it's definitely English and that's what we call it. When we're joking, we may call it Strine, but the rest of the time, I assure you it's universally known as English.
What's your point? None of my Aussie friends speak Australian, if you ask them they'll all tell you they speak ENGLISH
