Do Beauty Pagents empower women or degrade them. (Degrade..lack of a better word) What do you guys think? Would any women on here enter a beauty pagent?
Update:As I said...Degrade, Lack of a better word. I am NOT saying is is indeed degrading. This is an age old argument, some women are all for it, some are very much against it.

I can't think of any ways that they could be empowering. Ones I've seen make women conform to certain bizarre standards of "beauty" that require them to starve themselves, exercise constantly, deplete the ozone layer through abuse of hair spray, and other tedious shallow actions.
I wouldn't exactly call them synonyms for "degrading" either, though. This is because these women choose to enter the pageants. If pageants ARE based on objectification and so forth, then these girls choose to be treated this way, so it's different from combating unwanted daily chauvinism that is pushed at you.
So to me beauty pageants are just...there. They serve no purpose. They are silly and chauvinistic, but they are not really harmful per se either. Sort of like reality television, and most summer blockbusters. These things just exist and don't contribute anything positive but don't do a huge amount of damage either, other than promoting inanity and stupidity.
It depends on how you wish to look at it.
From my point of view(I did beauty pageant for 12 years) they are a great thing. You get to meet intelligent, friendly and beautiful girls who have wonderful goals and plans for their life. Many beauty pageants these days, especially ones on a local basis that don't get widely publicized are allowing women of all shapes, sizes, and colors in. They are actually being done very tastefully.
My only problem with them in general is a woman should not be told she is less than beautiful, she is less than special if she can't or doesn't want to parade around in a bikini on stage.
I am COMPLETELY against child pageants though. There should be an age limit of no less than 12 or 13. As long as the person in question is entering the pageant willingly then I never have and never will have a problem with them.
A beauty pagent is an assessment on what God has bestowed up on some of His children. What does it have to do with degrading women?
If women were to compete on what they have achieved themselves and the worst achiever wins the crown, then it is degrading.
If there are enough women out there to watch and participate in the pageants than they can keep doing it, I guess. I have never had any interest. I used to get letters in the mail from some of these organizations asking if I wanted to audition and I never went. I don't think they're "bad", I just think they're lame. I feel like anything positive I could learn from being in pageants I have instead learned from my mother, my grandmother, my ballet classes, some etiquette classes and team sports. So it's not really necessary.
ONE time, like a close-by JayCees competition is okay. extra effective than one a 365 days is purely too many, too volatile. How did a 5 365 days previous even pay attention some competition? Are acquaintances from kindergarten in pageants? teenagers in pageants could look their age! in contrast to little adults. ability lip gloss yet no longer lipstick. No mascara, etc.
More women watch beauty pageants then men. The men in my family would have nil interest in sitting down and watch Tiffany from Paraguay win Ms Universe. They simply would not. Women like these shows as they can be bitchy and scrutinising!
I've never liked beauty pageants because I think that putting that much emphasis on looks is dangerous. Still, if a teenager or young woman wants to enter one, that's her choice.
However, these child beauty pageants are despicable. They dress little girls up like whores and parade them around half-dressed so all the pedophiles can have fantasies about them. The mothers are trying to live vicariously through their children.
no. its a woman's choice to enter a beauty competition. its not degrading as far as i can see. they are judged on their looks. its shallow and gives the wrong message, but thats the world we live in.
like a previous poster mentioned, children pagent's i dont like. we wonder why so many kids are abused but have competitions where children are dressed slutty! its not cute or beautiful, its pretty horrific.
I don't think they do anything for women. I watched the last 15 minutes of the last Miss USA pageant and it was horrible. The women had so much makeup on their faces they lookedl ike they were in their 30s (all early 20s), they were asked one question and they'd answer another. I think the only people who care about peageants are people in them, and their mothers. Now if you wanted to talk about child pageants, that would be another whole story.
It is funny how there's not a contest to judge the men beauty. Anyway, I think to judge based on looks degrades persons.
