A lot of Christians like to emphasize the "Atonement", but that interpretation overshadows the Resurrection. If the whole point of the "sacrifice" was to settle accounts between humnaity and its creator, then the Resurrection is unnecessary.
A fairly obvious message in Christ's death is self-sacrifice for the sake of truth. Considering the injustice of his trial and sentence, and his own dread at the prospect, why would Jesus consider going through with it, unless he believed it was more important to witness to his innocence and to his teachings than to survive?
Transcendence is another interpretation, and it underlines the significance of the Resurrection. Normally with death would come the end of hope. But by Christ's rising, he overcame his adversaries. Their efforts against him ultimately failed. The importance of all this for us is the model it sets.
The underlying message of Christianity is that there are things more important even than life. More frankly, it is the fear of losing life that keeps people from living bravely, honestly and compassionately. Jesus did not let fear pf other people's power rule his life or keep him from speaking and acting as he knew he should. He accepted the "crosses" that came to him, whether it was to reach out to an outcast or to say something that would upset the authorities, and he urged others to do the same.
Looking at Jesus' death as a mere transaction robs it of its relevance to us (and makes God a heartless legalist). It is rather an example for us, not to seek out death but to know that right actions will have consequences that are worth enduring.
