I've read some other answers and don't really see one for my question.
I'm looking to travel to Canada for employment and the last time I was there they did an FBI background check... it came up with a couple minor things but that was some time ago.
How can I go about having someone do this for me... or do it myself.
I contacted a private investigator and they really didn't give my much information except to tell me it would cost too much for him to do it. I think he was too busy and didn't have time for my case.
Thank you for your time.

You contact your local FBI office and ask where you can get a copy of your records. They will tell you where to send and how much it cost. I know for my CCW it is $40 for this service.

I think you have missed a few steps here. Americans may not work in Canada without a work permit or permanent residency. I recommend you read Citizenship and Immigration Canada's web site.
In order to get a work permit, you need a job offer from a Canadian company which has permission from Citizenship and Immigration Canada to hire foreign workers. This permission is only given in professions where there is a shortage of workers in Canada. This is limited to extremely skilled professions (doctor, engineer, nurse, specialized trades, etc.) or extremely temporary seasonal work (farm workers, ski resorts, certain hotels, etc.) Even skilled workers can spend years looking for a qualifying job offer.
Once you have the job offer (with an attached labour market opinion report) you may apply for a work permit at the nearest Canadian embassy or consulate. You will need to undergo a medical exam, background check, and proof of finances (usually six months living costs).
local police station can do that for you as well as the FBI website.
