I plan on joining the national guard in a year and then attending a university maybe in Colorado as I want to move to Denver. While I'm in the guard I want to attend a college and major in a science degree. I want to get a bachelor's in either geology or chemistry. I love both and don't know which one to choose. I like learning about the earth and the processes it undergoes and formations and all that and I like learning how to combine different chemicals and make new substances, chemistry is like magic. Which one is more interesting and has more high paying jobs? What are those jobs? What exactly will I learn at a college level in both subjects? Could I do a double major or just major in one and get a minor in the other?

I majored in Geology and minored in Chemistry. I worked as a geologist in the oil industry for 40 years. I hired a lot of Chemists but they were PhD's and worked in research. By the way, all the hoods in the labs are collecting dust. All the chemistry is done at the atomic level on computers now.
Geology starts at the MS level. You can choose Geology, Geophysics or Petroleum Engineering depending on your preferences. Geology is all about the science and you should have an artistic bend. Geophysics is all about the math and you should have a computer bend. Petroleum Engineering is all about project management and you should have an mechanical bend.
You will have fun learning at college by not much will be applied. When I hired a BS I expected then to follow instructions. When I hired a MS I expected them to write a good report. When I hired a PhD I expected them to come up with new ideas.
Get outstanding grades in the science and math classes. It is easy because they are very interesting. If they are not interesting to you, you are in the wrong major. Stay in for the highest degree you can get. It will pay off in two to five years and you will enjoy your job assignments much more
Chemistry gives you much more opportunities if you get a degree in it but it is also has a lot more work involved with studies and scoring well in exams
