I had a sweep yesterday evening. I have 2 questions: What is the time line if it will work. The doc said it would be that night if it worked. Im cramping harder and having random contractions. But all smoke yet again and no fire. Also I read that gbs+ women such as me should not get a sweep. I did not know this prior and am now freaked out. I want to know if anyone knows if this was really that dangerous. From what I read its still inconclusive. I want the sweep to work so I can get the baby out and make sure he or she is o.k. I have not broken my water or had the doctor damage the water bag during the sweep. The baby is active still also.

Im also GBS+ and currently 2 days over due - I went to see my midwife today who suggested it however she said that we should leave it for a few more days as we're only just overdue (and thats if the dates are right) - With regards to the GBS - its only if our waters break that the baby is in risk of infection.. I've been told so many different things from 'dont worry a quicker labour the better' to 'we need to give you anti biotics for at least 4 hours' so what are we supposed to believe? - All i know is that i've worried and worried about the risks etc and have now realised that its not going to prevent anything no matter how much i worry. Our babies are protected whilst the waters are in tact, the second they break we need to go to the hospital where we will have anti b's through IV until our babies are born.. they will then monitor babies for 24 hours - maybe 48 - to see if the baby will need anti b's too. With regards to a membrane sweep - all i know is that they avoid doing internal checks during the pregnancy and like to leave internals to a minimal where possible when you are GBS + incase it interferres with things, however as stated by someone else they wouldnt put our children at risk so dont worry yourself. I was intending to have the sweep today but because its early days chose to leave it - i wouldnt have refused it though as my Midwife wouldnt put my baby at risk.. try to relax - i know its hard.. i have so many fears and worries from infections to giving birth - its crazy.. but if we keep worrying then we're more likely going to need to be induced as we're stopping the natural hormone in releasing that starts labour off.. the more we stress the longer our babies will stay put.
Good luck - feel free to email me, maybe we can support each other :)
Sweeping the membranes only have a success rate of about 50%. I know a woman that had it done 3 times and never went into labor on her own and another woman got it done and 4 hours later she went to the hospital in labor. The risk with GBS positive, is after your water breaks. But as long as you get to the hospital at least one hour before you give birth, they will give you antibiotics that will help keep your baby safe from getting GBS. The longer your water is broken without delivery, the greater the risk that the baby can contract it. But if you get the antibiotics during labor, it should be fine. The Dr wouldn't do anything that would be dangerous for your baby.
