anony You have it just about right. The exercise is almost identical, and there is no real difference is calorie burn. One, the exercise bike, is very much like riding a bike with an upright sitting position. Many people have week backs, knees, or hips. That weakness is really emphasized when pedaling in the upright sitting position. The lowered riding position, with higher knee position, on the recumbent takes much of the pressure off the joints and places it on the back (like laying down).
