The only real similarity is the creation of the monster. In the original Mary Shelley story, the method of production is not disclosed but seems to be magical and Frankenstein's basic crime is the abuse and neglect of his creation, all else flows from this. In the modern Hollywood story science is used to revivify the monster via electricity and Frankenstein plays the part of a modern Faust, blind to all but knowledge. The scientific destruction wrought in WWI and WWII enters in to the modern interpretation, with science being twisted to evil.
Shelley's concern seems to be primarily with how Frankenstein's conduct breeds cruelty in the monster. The modern concern is with the destructive capabilities of scientific amorality.
