Typically they are in 2D/3D for your everyday routine ultrasounds. They don't typically do a 4D unless there is a medical reason to do so. I was high risk with both of my pregnancies, I got a 4D image of my daughter when I was about 28/30 weeks or so with her.
4D ultrasound machines are pretty expensive, not all facilities have them. And sometimes the images are really poor, a lot depends on the baby's position and gestational age.
All together they gave me about 8 or 9 pictures. I would say that 4 of them were just the regular pictures but the rest was either 3d or 4d. I prefer the 3d or 4d ones. I love looking at her, they were so clear.
Our doctor's office does the black and white 2D ultrasounds. Where we live, there are specialty ultrasound places that you can go to and pay out of pocket (insurance won't cover them) to get a 3D or 4D "picture" ultrasound. Those pics are really cool...but I am content knowing I'll see my little girl's real face in just a couple of months You can still see a lot on the 2D black and white ultrasounds! It's so amazing!
My doctors office does the 3d/4d scans for everyone for free because they have the equipment and all they do is push one button to switch it over. Of course our insurance pays more for it but it's just knocked up as a regular ultrasound because his practice does ultrasound that way. So at my 1st ultrasound I was 8 weeks I saw my baby in 3d/4d and it looked like a little peanut. I was really excited but now I just want to see more and more scans to see how my little one is growing.

I've had 2D and 3D ultrasounds. I've never seen a 4D ultrasound. I liked the 3D ultrasound, but it wasn't that great. Either one works for me.

Im in the UK and we don't normally do 4d/3d scans unless you go private.
However im taking part in a study and have been lucky enough to have 2d and 4d/3d scans done for free.
my profile picture is a 3d one of my baby at 12 weeks waving.
I like both but 3d is quite fascinating
