Maybe an "underground" question pertains to a Subway sandwich.
If I am making a pannini sandwich with cheese slices, I will press down on the pannini maker. This way some of the cheese hits the grill and adds to the flavor. Best made with Sara Lee sourdough bread or another good brand.
I cut the crust off my sandwiches, for some reason I can't explain I have never liked the bread crust. I don't smash my sandwiches, lol. As a matter of fact I am not a sandwich person except just once in a long while. Poppy
I don't like smashed sandwiches except for the Cuban style that I tried in Tampa last year.
I like the sandwiches made with warm fresh baked french bagette at a local Vietnamese sandwich shop. The warm crusty bread makes the sandwich outstanding & it is fresh baked every 30 minutes.
I can't say I know why but they do. I did this as a child and sometimes still do. My grandson loves it when I make him a sandwich with 2 slices of bread, press it down and cut with a cookie cutter. He insists I make one for myself too. No problem. I love pannini's too.
I don't know how your q could be interpreted as anything remotely underground; actually I do enjoy q's with a double meaning. They leave room for creativity and get great answers..
Brings back memories of your youth, at least it does to me? Aah, to be a kid again back in the 1940's and 1950's with few cares. The most pressing problem is getting the chores done so us guys could go skinny dipping or noodling, the water never felt better or fish tasted better.
My cholesterol level is through the roof, so I've taken to eating nothing but whole grain bread with flax seeds and whatever other plant life and sticks they can manage to throw in...and my bread won't smash anymore!...lol But I DO remember the days when smashed sammies tasted oh so good!
Is this another one of your 'underground' questions daisy ?
My dad used to fold his bread over then eat it. Is it a senior citizen thing, hmm ? I have a big mouth and big teeth too; so I don't need to squashed my sandwiches to eat them.
I used to do that when I was younger, it just quicker to get into your mouth.. I like doing that with PB&J sandwiches..I also like taking the bread and make little balls with them and pop them in my mouth..I guess the others on here just don't have any imaginations..LOL..=)

That is personal preference. I haven't liked smashed bread since I I was about 10 and my Grandmother made bread.
Don't like smashed sandwiches or mushy foods either!
