When I try to start it the mower spits and sputters so I cleaned the air filter and it runs a little better but I takes a few trying to spin to start but if I take the air filer off it fires right up at a real high rpm so I have to hurry up and push the air filter back in to get it to the correct rpm. Do I need and air filter. It's a bolnes mower with a Briggs and Stratton motor. I hope this is enough info. I'm sure that's the problem but I'm 16 and don't have much small engine knowledge I'm trying to learn from research and trial and error

YOU NEED A AIR FILTER no matter what, your even supposed to replace them after 25 hours, it blocks any kind of particle from getting into the engine from the fuel valve getting into the piston cylinder, ruining the cylinder wall and causing scraping of everything else. I'd say get a new air filter, spark plug and maybe run some stabilizer fluid through the gas lines to get out any carbon deposits on the valves
I've had this problem a number of times and the best trick that has worked for me every time is this. Go to your neighborhood hardware store and get a bottle of carburetor and injector additive. It should come in a six to 10 oz. bottle. Add the entire contents of the bottle to your lawn mower gas tank and top the tank off. My mower usually smoothes out in about 5-10 minutes. Hope this works for you out there as it has for me.
empty the gas tank and rinse it out with fresh gas ,and also change the plug and air filter once it starts adjut the carb screws till it smooths out.,,,,,,,,
