WW 2 was a disaster for Japanese-Americans who were citizens of the U.S. By Presidential Order 9066 Franklin Roosevelt set up Internment Camps in the West that all Japanese-American citizens were placed in starting in 1942 and lasting for the duration of the war. All of their businesses, homes, and banking accounts were confiscated by the federal government. The camps were under 24 hour armed guard and anyone caught trying to escape were put in a federal prison. Blacks were segregated in all-black units and had duty in supply or kitchens. It was thought that blacks were incapable of fighting in combat units. The Tuskegee Airmen proved just how wrong this was. These men were all black pilots who flew the newest fighters (P-51 Mustangs) to escort U.S. bombers to targets and back. Not one plane they escorted was shot down by a German fighter. A few Native Americans served in the military. The most famous Native Americans in WW 2 were Navajos who were called Wind Talkers and served with the U.S, Marines in the Pacific where the Japanese were not able to understand their language. Orders to Marine units were given by Navajos to Navajos. One of the last survivors of the men died this week at the age of 90.
