I have had a total of 8 of these wonderful cars. Without going into many pages, they are based on the MK1 Golf platform. They do not have power steering unless its a LHD 16v model which was for the European mainland market. Most of the suspension and engine/transmission was in common with Golfs of the 1980s. They were reputedly built at the Kharman Ghias factory in Germany and the build quality was good for the age , body corrosion protection was excellent (MK2) and there are still quite a few around. They are expensive to insure but mostly you can now get classic insurance. The best models were the fuel injected ones but a GT2 with a Webber conversion is still potent. A big problem is the fuel filler neck which suffers internal corrosion which is catastrophic to the fuel injection car but not too bad with the carb car with an in line plastic filter. The handling is good even by todays standard but of course tight parking is horrendous with the lack of power steering. The interior is durable and hard wearing, if not very plasticky again by modern standards. If you can live with the steering it is a very use-able car which will give you many years of use due to the excellent corrosion protection. I would have one tomorrow if I did not have a 30 years old Saab 99 turbo robbing me of garage space !
Mechanically it is basically the same as a GTI.
But I don't remember exactly what that had back then.
I think it was a dual overhead cam engine, that was great.
Later on they added a supercharger, that really took off.
But I don't think that came that early.
It is a nearly 30 year old vehicle. The only thing that matters is its condition and service history. If you like it and it is sound, go for it.
GO for VW s they perform better always
