My husband and I are going to be staying in the Northern half of the North Island of New Zealand in late September, and we're trying to figure out what to pack. I've seen that it's weird weather, but since we're further north I'm trying to figure out how cool the weather may be, and how much per day it rains. I visited Ireland last year and it rained every day I was there, but it was only a sprinkle for about 30 minutes or so. I'm wondering if it'll be more like that or if there's a higher chance of crazy downpours. If it helps, we'll be staying in Auckland, Tauranga, Rotorua and a couple small towns up near the northernmost tip of NZ.
Thanks for any help!

September is the beginning of spring. Different areas have different weather, like it could be raining here in tauranga but not in auckland or vice versa. Not to mention our weather in general is unpredictable.
The 'normal' seasonal weather patterns here pretty much flew out the window several years ago. Have you ever heard The Crowded House song, Four Seasons In One Day? That pretty much describes our country. It's thin, mountainous, and surrounded by sea on all sides; therefore there's very little stability in our weather patterns.
Nevertheless, generally speaking, it's Spring weather in September, so warming up. The northern half of NZ is about 5 degrees C warmer than the bottom of the North Island. There can be lots of rain, wind, and cloudy spells with intermittent sun. You'll need a strong umbrella. And carry wet weather gear no matter where you go, as it can change on a dime. The main 'secret' is layers.
