First, you need to have the stray puppy vet checked ASAP---if it is over 12 weeks, the vacinnes can begin. She also needs to be checked for internal parasites as new nursing pups get worms from the mother's milk. It just happens that way.
She is only being a puppy when she bites you. This is called play-biting, but should not be tolerated. When she does it again, you do this:
IMMEDIATELY after she nips you,put your hand gently aroundher muzzle and say "NO!" to a commanding voice. You don't need to shout, just be firm. You will have to do this a lot.
What breed is she, is she the only puppy and are you keeping her. Go to the library or a bookstore and get Ceasre Milan's book on dog and puppy training---he is the best./
Good luck and remember ---get her to the vet!!
Getting bit by a dog is NOT a good thing froma medical and as well as a dicipinary standpoint.
I agree with Doc's suggestion. I've had that work for me in past. What you can also do is get some of this sour apple spray that many pet places will sell. It's really ment to be sprayed on them when they do something bad, but I found that if you spray it on your skin in areas where they like to bite they get a nasty taste of it. Downside is you've got sour apple spray on you. Some people would suggest that you dont put it on your own skin, but I never had a problem with it. That's how I got my bird and my dog to quit biting. Also stare her down. Look her straight in the eyes, dont blink dont move, wait for her to look away. I worked at an animal hospital for 3 years and found that I could get submissiveness out of even the meanest dogs. Be prepared to do it more than once and you might have to wait awhile for her to look away. I waited almost 4 minutes once, and I almost lost that stare down. Some people say it doesnt work but it seemed to work for me. goodluck.
she's not stupid, she's a puppy. you need to ignore the biting. the second her teeth touch your skin, say "OUCH!" loudly enough to startle her a little (not scare her too much though) get up and walk away for a minute or two. then come back and try petting her again. if she bites again, leave again. repeat. if she follows you and bites your legs, go into another room where she can't follow you. she needs to learn that biting people means they LEAVE! thats the last thing she wants so she'll get it quick. don't get mad though, or do anything mean to her like some people will suggest, shes just being a puppy and she doesn't mean to hurt you!
It's standard puppy stuff. You say, "NO!" in a loud voice or clap your hands loudly and yell "NO." She'll stop because you'll startle her that way. Then leave her alone for a few minutes (not too long). Then pet her and let her know you still love her even though she's a bitey little puppy.
She should outgrow it. she's teething. You may want to distract her with a puppy safe chew toy. When she starts biting, give her that. She'll learn quickly what's for biting and what isn't.
First, let me agree with what I've read so far...tell the dog no in a loud manner to startle her. Second, let me say something new. Get a chew toy for her and praise her when she chews on that. In fact, keep that toy handy so that when she gnaws on you, you can yell at her then immediately hand her the chew toy to praise her.
I did this with the last puppy I raised and she stopped using me to chew on. I didn't do this with a previous puppy and all that dogs life, I was the chew toy.
There are many different training methods. Puppys are usually mouthy it's because they will soon loose those sharp milk teeth and get their adult teeth. So they want to chew. One way to deal with it, when she bites when you're petting her grab her muzzle (mouth) and hold it closed (don't hurt her though) and firmly tell her no, you will have to be repetitive with this because one time wont work. Be consistent, repetition and positive reinforcement is very important when it comes to training your dog. Praise her when she allows you to pet her without biting. Good luck, be patient and consistent.
She's prob. teething and nervous. Get her some chew toys and encourage play with those. when she bites the back of your leg ignore her - animals don't understand specific punishment very well. they will learn much more specifically and quickly if they are simply rewarded for good behavior and ignored when they do something bad. all they want is attention, and sometimes it's hard for them to know what our versions of 'good' and 'bad' attention are.
have fun with your new puppy!
The puppy wants to play. I will also write what I was once advised, "If you play with a puppy/dog how do you expect it to protect itself?" Just remember when you play with a puppy it must claw or bite to protect itself. YOU can teach the pup not to bite or claw hard.
good on you for adopting a stray! i can't pass a stray dog without stopping, i take them home w/ me & try to find a forever home for them.
my dogs like to play-bite me too. i'm (slowly) training them not to. whenever your puppy starts play-biting you, tell her "no" in a firm voice, then walk away. my dogs don't like the word "no", and if i say "no" very sternly and point my finger at them, they stop. another thing that works is a spray bottle filled with water. spray her w/ water when she's doing something undesirable, and pretty soon she'll stop. my dogs are to the point that all i have to do is pick up the spray bottle and they straighten up :).
Take it to puppy training. Call your vet to find a place. The dog might have been mistreated and is confused about your intentions. Just have some patience, she'll come around.
