You can use dish soap or shampoo, just don't use too much due to all the bubbles it will create.

Powder or Liquid doesnt really make a difference its the ingredients in them that causes harm to the environment. Most laundry detergents available will contain phosphates and other chemicals that harm the environment. As an alternative you can buy completely organic liquid and powder detergents that are completely organic and made from natural products - no phosphates & chemicals. Better for your clothes, better for you and better for the environment.

If I run out I use something like greased lightening. The baking soda is a good idea too. It really helps the clothes smell good. If you do use dish soap just use a Tablespoon full. It has a high sudsing action

Unless your clothes are extremely dirty, you probably have enough detergent. People tend to use too much, anyhow. Make sure you use enough water so the clothes aren't too crowded and can move around in the washer.

Take the kids and run to the nearest corner store and get some detergent or you can you dish hing liquid, Hey it gets grease stains out.

If your clothes are smelly, but not really "Dirty" put some plain white vinegar in the wash. This will get the odors out.

Try dishsoap if they're still dirty. Unless you've been rolling around in the mud, they're probably ok.
