It goes to the same place that it goes when we're alive. It's true that energy can't be created or destroyed, but I think you misunderstand what energy is in this case. Consciousness isn't really a *thing* - it arises from the physical structure and electrochemical activity of the brain. When you die, that structure breaks down and that activity stops. The actual energy stored in the brain dissipates into the environment as heat, and is used by decomposer organisms as food. The difference is that it's no longer being replenished by the metabolism of your cells, which in turn, are supplied by the food you eat.
If you want a rough analogy, think of a car. The brain is the engine, and consciousness is the running of the engine. Cut off the fuel supply, and the engine stops running. The energy stored in the system doesn't go anywhere - it just stops flowing. The "running" of the engine doesn't go anywhere or get destroyed, it just ceases to exist, just like consciousness when the brain stops working.
Science hasn't been able to identify anything that you'd consider a soul. If it does exist, it's outside of what we can test - there's no evidence of a "spirit" nor is there a "spirit-shaped-hole" in our understanding of consciousness. Everything we know about consciousness tells us that it's the product of a functioning brain, and that "the mind IS what the brain DOES". It's also not compatible with the idea that the brain is some sort of "receiver" and that consciousness resides outside of the body. I'm not going after anyone's personal or religious beliefs here - if you want to believe in a soul, then go ahead. You just can't make an argument for its existence through a scientific basis.
You die only after you have lost your energy. Soul is nothing but an energy needed for the functionality of a body. This is not a spirit or anything else. It never goes anywhere but ends. No one lives after death in any form. Spirits are separate elements. They are knowledge, skill, interests, feelings, emotions and everything. Even thoughts are not your own. When you want to take a decision on a matter, one after another they think and you just listen, accept or reject the ideas which they transmit to your mind in the form of thoughts. A human being is just a robot made of flesh, bones, tissues etc., and a toy of the spirits for their games.
I think what you are trying to say is Essence rather than energy. Energy dies away in different parts as different parts of the body all die away at different times. Where the essence energy goes is a mystery, debatable and endless in opinion. Some may say its recycled and others say it goes to another plane of existence or perhaps reaches another level of existence. Both can be hypothetically judged from a scientific standpoint or a spiritual perspective.
Our energy gets used up and taken away. Our soul travels to a 49 day old... You won't comprehend what I'd say. It's just your soul going into different embryos until enlightenment in achieved.
When you are dead there is only chemical potential energy in your tissues. Energy is used by living organisms to synthesise ATP. ATP cannot be stored and is used immediately.
What is left after you are dead is a source of food for detritivores (numerous species of invertebrate animal) and decomposers (fungi and bacteria). You are a source of nutrients that can be used as respiratory substsrates and for biosynthesis. If you are cremated you are combusted.
The body is energy and is inhabited by the soul and the energy of the body comes from what we eat to sustain it when the body dies it goes back to the earth and is recycle but the soul does not die.
Spirit is Energy (as we know it), and Energy is Spirit. Upon death Spirit leaves the physical body that "housed" it, and goes back to God, who gave it physical presence in the first place.
The Bible says: “The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all.” (Ecclesiastes 9:5; Psalm 146:4) Therefore, when we die, we cease to exist. The dead can’t think, act, or feel anything. “Dust you are and to dust you will return.” (Genesis 3:19) Before God created Adam “out of dust from the ground,” Adam did not exist. (Genesis 2:7) Likewise, when Adam died, he returned to dust and ceased to exist.

Where does the energy of a power plant go when you permanently switch it off?
That's the same place our bodies' energy goes when we die.

Body lives till there is energy.
Once the energy exhausts the body dies.
You will go for another body then.
